Backup truckload capacity when your carriers reject tenders

In a tight market, contract carriers turn down more tenders, and every rejection pushes a load down the routing guide toward the spot market — usually late in the day and at a worse price. Throughline gives high-volume shippers a backstop that takes the load by email, prices it and brings back vetted carriers for you to approve.

No platform fee. No login required to estimate a lane. Nothing is booked without approval.

Why rejections are climbing

Tender rejections rise when spot prices climb above contract: carriers have better-paying freight available, so they accept fewer contract loads. Through 2026, rejection levels for dry van, reefer and especially flatbed ran well above the prior year, and major brokers reported routing-guide failures staying elevated into October.

Shorter hauls tend to be covered more reliably than long ones, and outbound lanes from one-way markets fail first.

How to backstop a routing guide

Shippers that keep service levels up in a tight market usually do some of these:

  • Keep a broker in the routing guide for every key lane, not only as a last resort
  • Review rejection data by lane monthly and re-bid the lanes that fail most
  • Tender with as much lead time as operations allow
  • Give the backup broker the same load details the primary carrier gets, so nothing is lost in the handoff
  • Watch for lanes where a rejection is followed by a late pickup — those cost the most

How Throughline covers rejected tenders

Forward the tender or the lane spreadsheet by email — no new portal to learn first. Each one becomes a priced quote and load, and every tender gets a clear accept or decline, so your planners know where the load stands.

When a truck is not confirmed as pickup nears, we email up to three options you can click: approve a revised rate, move pickup a day, or switch to a team truck. If a booked carrier misses pickup or drops the load, we start re-sourcing. Before any rate con goes out, we check active FMCSA authority and carrier identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability insurance, match the carrier's phone to its FMCSA record, and screen against a library of known fraud patterns. Anything that can't be confirmed goes to a person — it doesn't go through.

Less chasing. Fewer surprises.

The same five commitments on every load, starting with the one that matters most here.

Keep emailing your loads. We’ll take it from there.

Send tenders, quote requests or lane spreadsheets the way you do today. They become priced quotes and loads, and every tender gets a clear accept or decline.

If your load is at risk, you hear first — with choices.

The carrier on the rate con is the carrier that shows up.

Before any rate con goes out we check active authority, verify identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability, and flag “paper” carriers. Carriers with an Unsatisfactory FMCSA safety rating or an active out-of-service order are never dispatched, and a Conditional rating needs a manager’s sign-off. Bank-detail changes wait 48 hours.

  • Checked before the rate con
  • 48-hour hold on bank changes

Stop asking where the truck is.

You hear when the carrier is booked, at pickup with the driver’s name and mobile, if it’s running late, at delivery, and when the POD is on file. Updates carry a no-login tracking link you can forward to your receiver, and a brief of your freight lands every Monday.

  • Driver name and mobile at pickup
  • No-login link for your receiver

Invoice and POD in one file.

When the POD is verified, your invoice arrives as one PDF with the POD and BOL attached. Your AP team gets the paperwork with the bill instead of asking for it.

  • Invoice + POD + BOL
  • Raised on delivery

“Hold for me” is the default: no carrier is booked on your load without your OK. A firm quote stays valid for 24 hours.

Questions shippers ask

Talk to a person
01

What is a tender rejection?

+

A tender rejection is when a contract carrier declines a load the shipper offers at the agreed contract terms. The shipper then tenders to the next carrier in the routing guide or goes to the spot market.

02

Why do carriers reject tenders?

+

Mostly because they have more profitable freight available, no truck near the pickup, or the timing does not work. Rejections rise when spot prices climb above contract.

03

How fast can a broker cover a rejected load?

+

It depends on the lane, equipment and how close to pickup the load comes back. Send the load as soon as it is rejected; Throughline prices it and brings back vetted carrier options for you to approve.

04

Can I send tenders by email?

+

Yes. Email tenders, quote requests and lane spreadsheets the way you do today and they become priced quotes and loads with a clear accept or decline.

05

Will you book a carrier on my load without approval?

+

Not by default. “Hold for me” is the default setting: no carrier is booked on your load without your OK.
