Truckload pricing explained

How much does it cost to ship a full truckload?

There is no single price for a truckload — the same 53-foot trailer can cost very different amounts on two lanes of the same length. What a shipper pays depends on a handful of factors you can see and a few you can manage. Here is how truckload pricing actually works, and the fastest way to a real number for your freight.

No platform fee. No login required to estimate a lane. Nothing is booked without approval.

The factors that set a truckload price

A carrier’s price for your load is built from these, roughly in order of impact:

  • Distance and the lane itself — some destinations are easy to reload from and some send trucks home empty
  • Equipment — reefer, flatbed and step deck usually cost more than dry van, and specialized securement adds more
  • Available capacity near the pickup on the day you need it
  • Fuel — diesel prices flow straight into fuel surcharges
  • Lead time — a load tendered the day before pickup costs more than one planned days ahead
  • Season — produce harvests, holiday retail and weather all move the market
  • Accessorials — detention, driver assist, lumper, layover, tarps and extra stops

Why truckload costs are high right now

Through 2026 the truckload market has tightened mostly because capacity left — carriers exiting and stricter driver enforcement — rather than because freight volume surged. Spot prices moved back above contract for the first time since 2021, and record diesel pushed fuel surcharges to new highs in September.

For a shipper, that means two things: quotes go stale faster, and the cheapest quote is worth less if the truck never shows. Locking in reliable coverage on repeat lanes matters more than shaving the last few percent.

How to lower what you pay

The levers that consistently work:

  • Tender with more lead time, especially on outbound lanes from rural or one-way markets
  • Give accurate weight, dimensions and dock hours so the price does not change at pickup
  • Load and unload on time to avoid detention, and flag lumper or driver-assist needs up front
  • Offer flexible pickup or delivery windows when you can
  • Consolidate repeat lanes with one broker so the lane history works for you

How Throughline prices your load

Enter the lane, date, equipment and weight and you get an instant market estimate with a low-to-high range — no login. The estimate is blended from multiple market data sources and our lane history. When you want a firm price, we source live carrier options for you to approve. A firm quote stays valid for 24 hours.

Known accessorials are listed with the quote, and when the POD is verified your invoice arrives with the POD and BOL attached so you can check what you paid for.

What changes when we run your truckload

Less chasing. Fewer surprises.

The same five commitments on every load, starting with the one that matters most here.

If your load is at risk, you hear first — with choices.

When a truck isn’t confirmed as pickup nears, we email up to three options you can click: approve a revised rate, move pickup a day, or switch to a team truck. If a booked carrier misses pickup or drops the load, we start re-sourcing.

  • One-click choices by email
  • Re-sourcing on a no-show or fall-off

Invoice and POD in one file.

When the POD is verified, your invoice arrives as one PDF with the POD and BOL attached. Your AP team gets the paperwork with the bill instead of asking for it.

  • Invoice + POD + BOL
  • Raised on delivery

The carrier on the rate con is the carrier that shows up.

Before any rate con goes out we check active authority, verify identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability, and flag “paper” carriers. Carriers with an Unsatisfactory FMCSA safety rating or an active out-of-service order are never dispatched, and a Conditional rating needs a manager’s sign-off. Bank-detail changes wait 48 hours.

  • Checked before the rate con
  • 48-hour hold on bank changes

Stop asking where the truck is.

You hear when the carrier is booked, at pickup with the driver’s name and mobile, if it’s running late, at delivery, and when the POD is on file. Updates carry a no-login tracking link you can forward to your receiver, and a brief of your freight lands every Monday.

  • Driver name and mobile at pickup
  • No-login link for your receiver

Keep emailing your loads. We’ll take it from there.

Send tenders, quote requests or lane spreadsheets the way you do today. They become priced quotes and loads, and every tender gets a clear accept or decline.

  • No new portal to learn first
  • Clear accept / decline on tenders

“Hold for me” is the default: no carrier is booked on your load without your OK. A firm quote stays valid for 24 hours.

Questions shippers ask

Talk to a person
01

How is a full truckload priced?

+

Mostly by the lane, equipment, available capacity near the pickup, fuel and lead time, plus any accessorials. Two lanes of the same length can price very differently depending on how easily the truck reloads at the destination.

02

Is full truckload cheaper than LTL?

+

Often, once a shipment fills a large share of a trailer or is heavy, fragile or time-sensitive. A full truckload moves direct from shipper to receiver without terminal handling. For a few pallets of non-urgent freight, LTL is usually cheaper.

03

What accessorial charges should I expect?

+

Common ones are detention after the free loading or unloading time, layover, truck order not used, lumper or driver assist, extra stops and tarps for flatbed loads. Tell your broker about them before booking so they are in the quote.

04

How accurate is an instant truckload quote?

+

An instant estimate tells you the market range for your lane on that day. A firm price comes from live carrier options. Throughline shows both: an estimate first, then carrier options you approve.

05

Does Throughline charge a platform fee?

+

No. Quoting, tracking and the shipper portal carry no platform fee. You pay the agreed rate for the freight.
