Refrigerated truckload shipping, with the temperature on the record

Reefer freight fails in small ways: the wrong setpoint, a cycle-mode unit on a load that needed continuous, a trailer that was never pre-cooled, a missed grocery appointment. Throughline captures the temperature requirements with the load, keeps them attached through carrier review, and tells you when a truck is at risk before pickup.

No platform fee. No login required to estimate a lane. Nothing is booked without approval.

What makes a reefer load go right

Every refrigerated quote request should carry:

  • The temperature setpoint in Fahrenheit, and the acceptable range
  • Continuous or start-stop (cycle) mode
  • Whether the trailer must be pre-cooled before loading
  • Washout or food-grade trailer requirements
  • Receiver appointment, lumper and pallet-exchange rules
  • Whether the load is frozen, chilled or protect-from-freeze

Why reefer capacity is tight

Refrigerated capacity has been among the tightest in the truckload market through 2026, with reefer spot and contract prices reaching records in September even as reefer volume ran below the prior year. Produce and holiday seasons tighten it further.

When reefers are scarce, planning ahead and giving complete requirements up front matters more than ever — a load that has to be re-tendered because the temperature was wrong loses its place in line.

How Throughline runs refrigerated loads

Temperature setpoint, operating mode, precool and accessorial requirements are captured with the load and travel through carrier review. Before any rate con goes out, we check active FMCSA authority and carrier identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability insurance, match the carrier's phone to its FMCSA record, and screen against a library of known fraud patterns. Anything that can't be confirmed goes to a person — it doesn't go through.

You hear when the carrier is booked, at pickup with the driver’s name and mobile, if the load is running late, at delivery, and when the POD is on file. When the POD is verified, your invoice arrives as one PDF with the POD and BOL attached.

What changes when we run your truckload

Less chasing. Fewer surprises.

The same five commitments on every load, starting with the one that matters most here.

If your load is at risk, you hear first — with choices.

When a truck isn’t confirmed as pickup nears, we email up to three options you can click: approve a revised rate, move pickup a day, or switch to a team truck. If a booked carrier misses pickup or drops the load, we start re-sourcing.

  • One-click choices by email
  • Re-sourcing on a no-show or fall-off

Stop asking where the truck is.

You hear when the carrier is booked, at pickup with the driver’s name and mobile, if it’s running late, at delivery, and when the POD is on file. Updates carry a no-login tracking link you can forward to your receiver, and a brief of your freight lands every Monday.

  • Driver name and mobile at pickup
  • No-login link for your receiver

Invoice and POD in one file.

When the POD is verified, your invoice arrives as one PDF with the POD and BOL attached. Your AP team gets the paperwork with the bill instead of asking for it.

The carrier on the rate con is the carrier that shows up.

Before any rate con goes out we check active authority, verify identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability, and flag “paper” carriers. Carriers with an Unsatisfactory FMCSA safety rating or an active out-of-service order are never dispatched, and a Conditional rating needs a manager’s sign-off. Bank-detail changes wait 48 hours.

  • Checked before the rate con
  • 48-hour hold on bank changes

Keep emailing your loads. We’ll take it from there.

Send tenders, quote requests or lane spreadsheets the way you do today. They become priced quotes and loads, and every tender gets a clear accept or decline.

  • No new portal to learn first
  • Clear accept / decline on tenders

“Hold for me” is the default: no carrier is booked on your load without your OK. A firm quote stays valid for 24 hours.

Questions shippers ask

Talk to a person
01

What is a reefer truck?

+

A reefer is a refrigerated trailer with its own cooling unit that holds a set temperature for frozen, chilled or temperature-sensitive freight. It can also run as a dry van when temperature control is not needed.

02

What is the difference between continuous and cycle mode?

+

In continuous mode the reefer unit runs all the time and circulates air constantly. In cycle (start-stop) mode it shuts off once the setpoint is reached and restarts as needed, which saves fuel but allows more variation. Many fresh and sensitive products require continuous.

03

Do you move frozen freight?

+

Yes. Give the setpoint and mode with your quote request and they stay attached to the load through carrier review.

04

Why do reefer loads cost more than dry van?

+

Refrigerated trailers cost more to buy and run, use fuel for the cooling unit, and there are fewer of them. Seasonal demand from produce and holidays tightens supply further.

05

How do I get a reefer quote?

+

Enter the lane, date, weight and temperature details on the quote page, no login required. You get an estimate first and can then have us source live carrier options to approve.
