Freight fraud · Double brokering · Fictitious pickups

How shippers stop double brokering and fake pickups

Freight fraud has moved from stolen trailers to stolen identities. The truck at your dock can carry a real MC number that belongs to someone else, or a load can be quietly re-brokered to a carrier nobody vetted. Here is what to verify, and how Throughline checks every carrier before a rate confirmation goes out.

No platform fee. No login required to estimate a lane. Nothing is booked without approval.

Have these ready

  • The carrier name and MC or USDOT number you want checked
  • Or, for a new load: lane, date, equipment, weight and commodity
  • Whether the freight is high-value or theft-targeted
  • Your dock’s release procedure, so the driver details we send match it

What double brokering and fictitious pickups look like

Double brokering is when the carrier you booked hands your load to another carrier without your knowledge — sometimes a legitimate truck that then goes unpaid, sometimes a thief. A fictitious pickup is when someone impersonates a real carrier, using its authority, insurance certificate and even a lookalike email domain, to collect the load.

Industry theft reports through 2026 show identity-based schemes growing faster than traditional cargo theft, with automotive parts and food and beverage among the most targeted categories.

Warning signs before the truck arrives

Slow down and verify when you see any of these:

  • The carrier’s phone or email does not match its FMCSA record
  • Authority that is only weeks old, or recently reactivated after years dormant
  • A request to change payment or banking details mid-load
  • A different company name on the truck, the paperwork or the driver’s answer
  • Pressure to release the load early or to a different driver than dispatched
  • An insurance certificate you received from the carrier rather than the insurer

What to verify at your dock

Ask your broker for the carrier name, MC number, driver name and truck and trailer numbers before pickup, and check them at the gate. Do not release freight to a different carrier than the one on the confirmation. If anything changes, call the broker on a number you already have, not one the driver gives you.

How Throughline vets every carrier

Before any rate con goes out, we check active FMCSA authority and carrier identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability insurance, match the carrier's phone to its FMCSA record, and screen against a library of known fraud patterns. Anything that can't be confirmed goes to a person — it doesn't go through.

Carriers with an Unsatisfactory FMCSA safety rating or an active out-of-service order are never dispatched, and a Conditional rating needs a manager’s sign-off. A change to a carrier’s bank details waits 48 hours with extra verification. A person approves the carrier before booking, and the driver’s name and mobile reach you at pickup so your dock can confirm who is loading.

What changes when we run your truckload

Less chasing. Fewer surprises.

The same five commitments on every load, starting with the one that matters most here.

The carrier on the rate con is the carrier that shows up.

Before any rate con goes out we check active authority, verify identity, require at least $100,000 cargo and $750,000 auto liability, and flag “paper” carriers. Carriers with an Unsatisfactory FMCSA safety rating or an active out-of-service order are never dispatched, and a Conditional rating needs a manager’s sign-off. Bank-detail changes wait 48 hours.

  • Checked before the rate con
  • 48-hour hold on bank changes

Stop asking where the truck is.

You hear when the carrier is booked, at pickup with the driver’s name and mobile, if it’s running late, at delivery, and when the POD is on file. Updates carry a no-login tracking link you can forward to your receiver, and a brief of your freight lands every Monday.

  • Driver name and mobile at pickup
  • No-login link for your receiver

If your load is at risk, you hear first — with choices.

When a truck isn’t confirmed as pickup nears, we email up to three options you can click: approve a revised rate, move pickup a day, or switch to a team truck. If a booked carrier misses pickup or drops the load, we start re-sourcing.

  • One-click choices by email
  • Re-sourcing on a no-show or fall-off

Keep emailing your loads. We’ll take it from there.

Send tenders, quote requests or lane spreadsheets the way you do today. They become priced quotes and loads, and every tender gets a clear accept or decline.

  • No new portal to learn first
  • Clear accept / decline on tenders

Invoice and POD in one file.

When the POD is verified, your invoice arrives as one PDF with the POD and BOL attached. Your AP team gets the paperwork with the bill instead of asking for it.

  • Invoice + POD + BOL
  • Raised on delivery

“Hold for me” is the default: no carrier is booked on your load without your OK. A firm quote stays valid for 24 hours.

Questions shippers ask

Talk to a person
01

What is double brokering?

+

Double brokering is when a carrier or broker re-brokers a load to another carrier without the shipper’s or original broker’s knowledge or consent. It breaks the chain of custody and is a common route to cargo theft and unpaid carriers.

02

How do I know the truck at my dock is the carrier that was booked?

+

Get the carrier name, MC number, driver name and equipment numbers from your broker before pickup and check them at the gate. Throughline sends the driver’s name and mobile at pickup so your team can confirm.

03

What should a broker check before booking a carrier?

+

At minimum: active operating authority, that the carrier is who it claims to be, insurance that meets your requirements, contact details that match the FMCSA record, and the FMCSA safety rating. Throughline runs these before every rate con and sends anything unconfirmed to a person.

04

Can I check a carrier for free?

+

Yes. Throughline’s free carrier check looks up a carrier by MC or USDOT number and shows its FMCSA authority and out-of-service status — no signup needed. Confirm current insurance separately before tendering.

05

Who is liable if a load is stolen through double brokering?

+

It depends on the contracts, the carrier’s cargo insurance and the facts of the theft. Ask your broker how claims are handled before you tender, and keep records of who you released the freight to. This is general information, not legal advice.
